Against the Storm blew us away when it exited Early Access late last year, and this superlative roguish RTS more than earned its place in our Game of the Year feature.

This fantasy strategy roguelite got a chunky update (1.1) just a couple of weeks ago, and now we’ve got fresh details about two upcoming content updates, and DLC plans. Keep scrolling down for more details.

It’s worth noting that Update 1.2 is the only one with specific info mentioned, however, developer Eremite Games has confirmed an additional free content update and the focus of future paid-for DLC. Based on what we’ve just been told, there are reasons to be excited.

Against the Storm Update 1.1

The full details of the game’s first content drop, which landed on January 16th, can be found over on Steam. However, there’s a somewhat truncated overview for you below, if you’d prefer it.

The update introduced a broader range of low-level objectives, to help make the early game more interesting. On top of that there are unique portraits for traders, new decorations, icons and sound effects, as well as a bunch of UI and UX enhancements. Quality of life stuff, for the most part.

Against the Storm Update 1.2

The Against the Storm roadmap confirms the contents of the second free update.

Next up we’re getting unique art for world events, localisation “for Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, Blightpost upgrades, and new windows to help track trends across city production and consumption.”

The Production / Consumption Trends window is described as the “headline feature” as “it will include a 30-minute resource history graph and a 5-minute ‘latest’ interactable graph with an option to select a point on it and check the log of resource operations.”

According to the Steam post, the Update 1.2 is due out in March – not too long to wait, then!

Against the Storm DLC plans

Update 1.3 is still too far off in the distance to predict. I quite enjoyed how publisher Hooded Horse explained that “heavy rainfall and thick foliage currently obscure the details”.

The developer’s DLC plans are much more exciting, as one would expect. We don’t know when we’ll get paid-for content drops, however, we do know that the studio is considering adding the following things, with a new playable species the obvious highlight:

  • New playable species
  • New biome
  • New buildings
  • New events
  • New perks
  • New orders

There’s a graphic for the roadmap, which you can see below. If your eyes want more, discover the other games that sit alongside Against the Storm in our guide to the best roguelikes and roguelites on PC.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
