Barotrauma has been around for years, but that hasn’t stopped
FakeFish and Undertow Games from constantly expanding the game with a steady stream of content updates. Now we’ve got Barotrauma’s first major expansion on the horizon: Home & Harbor.

If you’re not already in the loop, Barotrauma is a submarine game set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Players must command their sub under the surface, but the waters of Europa are not for the faint-hearted, and bad things are almost guaranteed to happen.

While it can be played solo, Barotrauma has developed a reputation as being a co-op favourite, with multiplayer support for up to 16 players. This is a very tactile game, with fun player-character physics that can create both tension and comedic moments.

Barotrauma launched into Early Access in 2019, left Early Access in 2023, and now the devs are ready to deliver the game’s first major expansion: Home & Harbor.

As implied by the name, the new expansion offers a bunch of new game-changing mechanics centred around owning and building your own outpost.

Not only that, but there’s also a new faction coming to the game. The Descendants use alien technology in some unusual ways, and their introduction to the game will add a few new story elements for players to discover.

The Home & Harbor expansion is arriving in Barotrauma on December 2 on PC (Linux, Mac, and Windows). Preceding this expansion, on November 26, the base game will be patched with the DLC Companion Update, which not only preps the game for the new systems, but includes a bunch of quality-of-life improvements.

There’s a new trailer for the expansion below, which goes into more detail, or you can take the plunge and head over to Steam and do the whole wishlisting thing for Barotrauma: Home & Harbor.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
