Well, here’s an interesting turn of events. The former lead dev at Mintrocket, the studio that gave us Dave the Diver, has started up a new studio, and they have just announced their first game. It looks pretty damn good, too!
Guns & Dragons is the name of the game, and the studio making it is called AButton Inc. Company CEO Kim Dae-hwon is the man who founded Mintrocket and oversaw the development of Dave the Diver during his time there. Now he has teamed up with Counter-Strike Online alumni to form a new studio and make a first-person roguelite shooter. Consider me intrigued!

Guns & Dragons is a co-op roguelite FPS for up to three players intended to rival the likes of Roboquest and Gunfire Reborn, and it has a very interesting hook. What I mean by that is the mishmash of weaponry it offers, with players able to bring both bows and guns to the fight. As a lapsed bowman myself, this pleases me greatly.

Not only will the weapons be silly – in a good way – but they’ll also be infused with arcane powers. I was also reading that you’ll be able to expand your base and upgrade your stats between runs. You know, the standard roguelite progression loop stuff!
The presser mentions a solo mode, too, so you don’t need a couple of friends to get the best out of the game. At least, that’s the aim. We’ll find out soon enough, as there’s a new playtest around the corner, where you’ll be able to try it for yourself.
In fact, the first Guns & Dragons playtest is due to start on July 30th at 12 a.m. PDT / 8 a.m. BST / 4 p.m. KST, and it will remain available until August 10th. You can request access over on Steam.
Finally, there’s a new trailer that shows Guns & Dragons in action below, and based on the footage and the various screenshots I’ve been looking at, I’m getting strong Overwatch / Blizzard vibes. If AButton can make a game that gets somewhere near that level, we’ll have a contender on our hands!
P.S. I just noticed an AI disclosure on the newly released Steam page. Based on the slightly confusing wording, it sounds like there are no gen-AI assets in the final build that people will be able to play, but they were used in early development. Make of that what you will.
