Action-RPG fans will be very familiar with the Diablo series, and as it’s an old favourite of mine, I thought I’d check in on the big reveal of Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026.

Diablo V Announced

It turns out the new Diablo is returning to the series’ proc-gen roots, and I’m utterly fascinated by the prospect and quite excited that a major franchise is wandering into my wheelhouse.

Diablo V’s story is set 100 years after the events of D4, and we’re living in an age of terror as “Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won.”

Players will be leading a caravan of survivors and protecting them on their journey, with classes Demon Hunter and Monk confirmed, as well as the new Plague Knight.

“You’ll become the Heir to Westmarch and traverse a Sanctuary actively reshaped by Diablo, accompanied by a growing caravan of survivors,” the studio explained on their blog.

A Hellish Road Trip

I love the idea of a new format, and a road trip through an apocalypse sounds super interesting (and a little bit like Darkest Dungeon 2). However, the bit that has captured my interest the most is the prospect of proc-gen adventures that are unique to each player.

“Sanctuary itself is no longer stable,” Blizzard teased. “Diablo is actively reshaping the world through terror, reflected by a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you return.”

Now, many people will be asking themselves: Is Diablo V a roguelike or a roguelite? Based on the description, it doesn’t sound like it. That said, with a proc-gen world to explore and the option to turn perma-death on, we are getting close to roguelike territory! How exciting.

Inventory management sounds like it’s also going to be a big focus in Diablo V, as Blizzard looks to walk back the years and tap into some of the things that made the first games so enduringly popular.

What next for Diablo IV?

As for Diablo IV, there’s a massive update dropping tomorrow (September 15th) called Season of Hell’s Legacy.

What’s more, Blizzard confirmed that while there are no plans for more major expansions (with focus now shifting to Diablo V), the Amazon class is bringing the pain to the fourth game in the first half of 2027.

I’m going to sign off with the panel where the fifth Diablo game was discussed in more detail. Check it out for all the latest from BlizzCon.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
