If you’ve been following the ongoing development of Dwarf Fortress, which turned 20 years old just a few days ago, then you’ll be aware of how big a deal it is that a deep and detailed magic system is coming to the game later this year.

As you can imagine, given the complexity of the game in question, which boasts the deepest simulation pretty much ever, this magic system has been in the works for literal years. Luckily, we don’t have to wait long, as the systems are due to land before the end of the year.

“We first announced our intention to create myths and magic systems over ten years ago, and it’s fulfilling and exciting that we’re finally able to make it happen,” confirmed co-creator Tarn Adams.

“My brother [Zach] and I always said we were making a fantasy universe generator, but it hasn’t truly felt that way since the fantasy settings we made always had the same bones.”

Adams continued: “Now there are different rituals, skills, workshops, environments, and items depending on what cosmology the game cooks up, and we’re just getting started. I can’t wait for people to get their hands on it and cause trouble.”

We can’t wait either, Tarn!

We’re promised that the so-called Myth & Magic Update will deliver proc-gen magic systems, each supported by the sort of intricate depth that Dwarf Fortress is synonymous with. As part of the update, we’re getting spells, rituals, research, and new art and audio to bring it all to life.

There’s some magical gameplay in the trailer embedded below.
