Update: The new DLC for Gunfire Reborn is out now on PC Steam, I can confirm. The new content introduces two new characters and four new weapons, and everything you need to know is outlined in the original news piece from back in late July, or on the Steam page linked above.

If you’re an early bird there’s a 10% discount, and currently the price is sitting at just under a fiver. And if you don’t have the base game already, it’s also on sale on Steam, and at the time of writing it’s 35% off. Not bad for a game that features prominently in my article about the best roguelite shooters!

July 30th: Gunfire Reborn, the excellent action-roguelite first-person shooter by Duoyi Games, is getting a new DLC pack later this year, and it’s called Realm of Frost and Inkwash.

The expansion is due to land at some point in Q3 of this year (that means between July and September) and it will bring two new playable characters to the game, and four new weapons.

The press release that landed in my inbox in the wee small hours of the morning doesn’t mention release platforms other than Steam, so for now we’re going to have to assume that there are currently no plans to bring the new content to consoles (I’ve requested clarification from the developer).

The new content features two new characters and four weapons, and I’ve included the details below along with relevant images! I’ll make sure to update this if/when I find out the release date!

Lyn (left): Blessed by the ice and snow, the enemy’s flaws are fully revealed. Lyn strikes the flaw to freeze the enemy and grants them a freezing burial.

Momo (right): Momo uses inkwash to block the threats and repel the targets. He can also transform into an inkwash-spirit and dart amongst the enemy.

Starfly (top-left): Harness the power of the Big Dipper and engage in battle with the spiritual partner! Shoot a barrage of bullets at the enemies.

Tracker: Supplemented by a multi-directional engine, the gun locks onto and pursues the enemies, leaving them nowhere to hide.

Phoenix Roar: Condense the Phoenix’s spiritual aura to expand the domain, then coordinate attacks with the hero’s skills.

Tempest (bottom-right): Activate the high-tech mask to tag all enemies within range, and inflict a stormy blow!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
