Look, please, Dear Reader, don’t give me a ticket for being a bit late with this one. Keep Driving was announced late last week, sure, but it only came to my attention today, as I trawled through some old press releases.

Keep Driving is the next game from the creators of Post Void and Sea Salt – both games that I liked! That being so, YCJY Games’ next effort has me most intrigued, and not just because it’s by a studio on top of its game right now.

Keep Driving is a road trip adventure game with procedural elements, but I don’t think it’s a roguelite in any definitive sense.

According to the Steam page, there are multiple endings, and each one will take between one and four hours to complete. That said, along the way, there’ll be variety from the denizens of the world that you meet, the roads you take or don’t, and the upgrades and customisation you make to your car.

The presser mentioned a “unique” turn-based combat system that involves using “your own skills and whatever’s lying around in the glove box to make it through” – a notion that caught my interest for sure. Especially the bit about this combat system being used during events such as “getting stuck behind a tractor” – a hellish frustration that all country road users will be well aware of.

The influences behind the game include roguelike royalty in the form of FTL (“Oregon Trail II, FTL, Two Lane Blacktop, Paris Texas, Jalopy, Gloom Haven, The 7th Continent, and the developers’ lives” – to be precise) and the vibes look on point.

The official Steam page linked above has more details, and there’s an announcement trailer embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
