If you haven’t already dived into the first Moonlighter, you’re all out of excuses after it was confirmed that the game will be made free to claim on PC through until August 9th.

Somewhat ironically for a game about running a shop, I think there’s been a bit of a technical issue, because the discount isn’t working properly yet. However, if you plan on claiming it, I suggest you head over to Steam and then check back from time to time. (Update: it’s fixed now!)

What is Moonlighter?

Both Moonlighter games are about running a shop, selling cool items to locals, and then heading out on adventures to source more gear. The first one has a more pixel-art feel, in homage to the SNES-era classics, and it did well for developer Digital Sun. Enough to spawn a sequel.

Moonlighter 2 adds a bunch of visual polish and a new story, and I’m pleased to confirm that the final version of the game will be out on PC (Linux, Mac, Win) on September 2nd. Not only that, but the game is coming to consoles at the same time!

Pre-orders are open for the PS5 and Switch 2 versions of the game, and it’s also heading to Xbox Series and will be on Game Pass.

What about 1.0 for Early Access folks?

If, like me, you’ve been playing the Early Access version of Moonlighter 2 on PC, then I should think that you’ll be interested in knowing what’s in the 1.0 update. Here are the highlights:

The story will wrap up, and we’re promised a “satisfying conclusion” – fingers crossed. We’re also being treated to new weapons and armour, the shop is getting an update, and something called the Bomb Path, where you’ll be able to set up chain explosions – cool!

Finally, there are two new ways to play the game. First, there’s a new Infinite Endless Vault, which will offer “an ever-escalating gauntlet of gold-filled runs designed to test even the most seasoned merchants.” Moonlighter 2 is also true to its roguelike roots, and there’s a hardcore mode with perma-death!

Bring on September 2nd!
