Seeing that Neon Abyss 2’s Weapon Reforge update had launched on Steam, I couldn’t believe we’re already on update four.

This fourth major update since the game launched in Early Access last July adds a new randomised flair to weapon gameplay. With the brand-new Weapon Affix system, every weapon in the Abyss now comes with its own static and dynamic affixes, making each one feel unique and exciting.

Weapons and affixes now come in a variety of rarity tiers, from Common to Legendary, with higher tiers offering more powerful effects. Additionally, weapon upgrading now includes a tempering option, allowing you to add a specific affix for greater customisation and strategic flexibility.

Alongside the weapon overhauls, the update introduces a new boss: Aphrodite, the Goddess of Seduction. As shown in the trailer below, this deadly temptress fires heart-shaped projectiles and can even transform mid-battle into a monstrous, multi-armed form.

Lastly, the Blackdog Patch system has been reworked based on player feedback and now uses a charged-based mechanic. Players no longer have to fail to earn a patch and the process has now been described as:

  • Every time you defeat a boss you earn one Blackdog Patch charge
  • To grab a Patch, you can spend three charges
  • If you do fail, you’ll instantly earn your three required charges
  • You can’t earn charges in a run where you have a patch active

The Weapon Reforge update isn’t the end of the Neon Abyss 2 roadmap. As shown below, two more updates are currently planned for May and July. The first will add a new game mode and agent, while the second will introduce a new Titaness along with additional bosses. As always, these plans are subject to change.

I got the chance to preview the demo for Neon Abyss 2 during last June’s Next Fest. In my first impressions, I said: “I haven’t played the original, but I found its snappy combat, its varied range of weapons and items, and its creature hatching and raising mechanics to be an absolute blast.”
