If you’re a serious fan of roguelikes and game design, then Roguelike Celebration is an upcoming event that should be on your radar.
If you’ve not heard of it before, it’s an annual online event where roguish folks from all corners of the industry come together to discuss a myriad of interesting topics within the scope of the genre.
I’ve just been through the schedule and there are some genuinely interesting subjects to be discussed, and from some seriously talented folks, too. Highlights include talks on:
The nuances of enemy design, by the art director of Slay the Spire 2, which you might have heard of.
How weird roguelikes are taking over the world, by one of the chief people behind the oh-so-promising Dungeon Clawler.
And the creator of sci-fi space shooter Reality Break will talk about how to make players feel like they’re breaking the system.
And that’s just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
I’m not going to cut and paste the full line-up here, because you’ll need to head over to the official Roguelike Celebration page to pick up a $30 ticket for the event anyway.
Finally, Roguelike Celebration starts on Saturday October 19 and ends on Sunday evening on October 20!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.
Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!
Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.
Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.
Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2 | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
