My inbox is overflowing with announcements this week, and one that nearly slipped by me was the reveal of Space Scum and its upcoming open playtest.

I wasn’t familiar with the game before checking out the trailer below, but after digging deeper, I’m thinking that developer Sole Survivor Games might be cooking up something very interesting indeed.

Space Scum is a turn-based tactics RPG with a distinctive art style wherein players must lead a band of mercs through a series of challenging encounters across a range of procedurally-generated planets. It sounds like said planets will remain in your game save once created, giving your progression throughout the game wider meaning and context.

As implied by the title, you’ll be directing a team of space-faring mercenaries through life and death encounters. If you lose people on the way, you’ll have to recruit new troops to your band of space bastards – each of which looks like a cross between a board game piece, a RimWorld character, and something drawn by an artist at Klei.

If you’re intrigued by this one, know that Space Scum is getting an open playtest next month, but you can register over on Steam ahead of time. The doors will open to the public on September 2.
