I’m a big fan of The Riftbreaker, the sci-fi city-builder bullet-hell hybrid. The team at Exor Studios has been working diligently on the game for eight years now, and there’s still more to come… but not too much.

Exor has one big free content update, World Expansion V, still to deliver to players. The big focus of this patch will be on replayability in the Survival mode. Long story short, they’re exploring ways to extend these runs for players who don’t want to stop after the 90-minute timer is done.

“We’re exploring ways to let those runs continue, possibly even adding an endless mode. Also, World Expansion V will be a free update for everyone,” the studio confirmed in a post on Steam, where they also confirmed that it would be the last update for The Riftbreaker.

The reason for Exor’s decision to call time on the game is that the studio is working on a new game. And it’s not a sequel to The Riftbreaker (although they don’t rule that out in the future, either).

They’re also working on something smaller in scale, which we’ll hear more about before the new game is properly announced, we’re told. They also confirmed that there are no plans to make paid-for DLC for The Riftbreaker, so they can focus on what’s ahead.

“We’re really excited about these new projects,” the Q&A explained. “While we don’t have anything to show yet, we’re happy with where things are headed.”

The other major thing being worked on is a new version of their in-house game engine, with the new title made using Schmetterling 3.0. Apparently, this will have additional benefits for The Riftbreaker’s final update. Here’s how they explained it:

“The engine work is especially rewarding, since many of the improvements can be brought back into Schmetterling 2.0 to make The Riftbreaker better and set up World Expansion V.”

There you have it: The Riftbreaker is getting one last major free content update, and there are no plans to continue work on the game thereafter. That’s because Exor Studio is working on a new project, and I’m looking forward to hearing more about what that is.

For more on The Riftbreaker, our Kieran checked in on the game earlier this year with the release of World Expansion IV.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
