It was last August that Ubisoft and Evil Empire delivered the 1.0 version of The Rogue Prince of Persia, and today, just over a year later, we just got an Anniversary Update that contains a number of interesting new ways to play the game.

There is a lot to unpack, so I’ll try to make sure I get everything, starting with the new arenas: the combat zones. These hardened gauntlets are for people with faster reaction times than me, but that’s most of you, so…

The biggest gameplay change will be the new freeze mechanic, which will let you slow and halt enemies. There’s also a new slingshot, and companion animals will bring new passive and active bonuses.

It also sounds like the folks at Evil Empire have tried to tweak the flow of the gameplay to better promote the parkour elements that the series is known for. This also leans into the new Speed Run and Parkour modes, which will require greater fluidity from player and prince alike.

But wait, Dear Reader, there is yet more! We’re also getting daily trials with shifting gameplay modifiers for those who want to be tested regularly, and in-game you’ll find new high-risk-high-reward Nyamtur Trials. There are also going to be new puzzle challenges, and the final biome got a bit of a reworking, too.

Finally, I think it’s fitting to conclude this by mentioning the new end stats screen, which is also now included in The Rogue Prince of Persia at the end of each run you attempt on PC, PS5, NS, and Xbox Series.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
