Tiny Rogues has just gotten a huge injection of content in the form of the new Between Heaven and Hell expansion. This free expansion adds a whole bunch of new content to the game, and developer RubyDev has just been sharing the particulars.

“Venture into the Shadow Planes, ascend the High Heavens, and delve deep into the Burning Hells,” the announcement on Steam reads. There “you’ll confront five brand new final bosses and a more formidable incarnation of Mega Death, now known as Primal Death.”

As you can see in the accompanying gif, there’s a strong nod to Super Hexagon in this particular boss battle. In total, we’re getting nine alternate floors with two alt bosses per floor.

On top of that, the number of playable classes just went up considerably. There are 17 new alternate classes, and they’re unlocked by conquering new floors with existing classes (which have been reworked).

The list goes on, with the addition of companions, over 500 new items, 150 new weapons (bringing the number up to 400), new traits, mini-games, and more.

Tiny Rogues meta-progression

I’ve saved the best for last: the new meta-progression system. Instead of souls, you now earn Mastery EXP which you can spend unlocking a branching skill web. It’s huge and there is loads to unlock. It’s pretty much optional, although I can’t imagine anyone skipping it.

RubyDev also moved to console existing fans about the change from Souls to EXP, writing: “don’t worry, your accumulated Souls have been converted to Mastery EXP, so you’ve been fairly compensated and haven’t lost any progress.”

Finally, there are expansions to tell you about. Into the Abyss will see players “delve into the sealed abyss and fighte even more dangerous endgame bosses.” Beyond the Matrix will mark the game’s full release and version 1.0. There are no dates mentioned, however.

Oh, one last thing. There’s a price rise on the way, so if you haven’t already taken the jump yet, now’s the time. If you need more persuading, check out my Tiny Rogues review for more superlatives.

Still with us? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked rogues, the following articles represent a huge collection of the best roguelike games ever made.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
