You may well be familiar with Anomaly Agent, a quirky side-scrolling platformer with a time-twisting narrative and a slick combat system. It was developed by Phew Phew Games, and I mention this because the studio has just unveiled its next project.

Anomaly President is the name of the developer’s new game, and it looks like it’s building on the irreverent, offbeat pixel-art style of its predecessor. However, where the first game had you fighting robotic henchmen as a special agent with temporal skills, this time you’re a presidential candidate who doubles as a vigilante in his spare time.

If that sounds surreal, I think that’s the point.

According to the game’s shiny new Steam page, you’ll be taking on a president who is abusing his power. As the write-up explains, you spend the day winning the hearts and minds of the people as a political opponent and presidential hopeful, but at night you’ll have to use an assortment of creative weapons to take down enemy gangs controlled by the incumbent leader.

It gets sillier though, as you’ll also be battling vice-president mini-bosses, each of which has a special power which you will take once you’ve defeated them.

The Steam listing mentions that we’ll be able to take down our enemies in “the craziest ways”, which sounds fun. It also confirms that the three core pillars of the game will be action, base building, and exploration, which has me intrigued as it sounds like a nice evolution of the gameplay in Anomaly Agent (which is half-price at the time of writing).

Phew Phew reckons it will take them a year of Early Access to get the feedback they need, and then implement it. Apparently, the game is already playable, but there’s no ending for the story yet, and the devs want to add more spit, polish, and areas to the map.

There’s currently no word on when Anomaly President will arrive in Early Access, so stay tuned and I’ll update this article if/when I get some fresh information to share with ye!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
