Brotato is now under new management after Evil Empire recently took over the direction of everyone’s favourite potato-themed auto-shooter.

This change of leadership has, in turn, let the game’s original developer Blobfish off the leash so it can work on new projects. We’ll hear more on that in due course, I’m sure.

At the time of the Brotato X Evil Empire announcement we got a little tiny update to the game with a small injection of content, but a much bigger one just dropped and, in particular, there’s quite a few interesting quality of life changes to tell you about.

A New Dawn Arrives

The new update is called New Dawn, and it has just landed on Steam, with other platforms still to follow.

As mentioned, the new content drop is the first from Evil Empire and it brings with it a whole bunch of interesting new stuff.

It has actually been in beta for a short while now, and I had an early look the other day, and I can confirm that the handover appears to be going rather smoothly so far. Here’s what’s new:

Save this, ban that

For some the highlight will be the new gear. There are six new items, all told, and one new weapon.

What I thought was much more interesting is the new ban system, which works a treat and allows you to remove certain items (not weapons) for the draw pool.

Another nice new feature is the addition of extra save profiles, and there are several other quality of life tweaks, including new icons, animations, and accessibility tweaks. Check the changelog linked above if you want all the details, or watch the overview trailer below.

Finally, this update is available now on PC – which includes the now supported Linux and Mac versions of the game! Console and mobile folks are gonna have to wait a little while longer for the new stuff, but it’s great to see the game branch out onto new platforms.

Right, now I’m going to head to my article about auto-shooters and games like Vampire Survivors, and update the platforms for Brotato!

Would you like to know more?

Still with us? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked rogues, the following articles represent a huge collection of the best roguelike games ever made.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
