I didn’t see this one coming, but upon reflection I think it makes a whole ton of sense that Evil Empire is taking over the reins of Brotato, the spud-tastic auto-shooter by Blobfish Games.

Blobfish has so far pushed the brilliant Brotato out to a number of platforms, and dropped one major expansion (it’s called Abyssal Terrors). However, the studio has tired of potatoes and has decided to instead make games about different root vegetables. Or something like that.

Rather than let Brotato go mushy in the cupboard, Evil Empire is working with Blobfish to breathe new life into the game. From here on in, the studio is taking control of the game, but given its track record when working on Dead Cells DLC, it feels like a really smart pairing.

The plan is to work “with the players as closely as possible to mash their ideas with ours, while we release regular content updates.”

Look at that: Evil Empire has even taken up the mantle of potato puns! Good on ’em, I say!

We’re promised more news soon with “broad ideas” and even “some betas” in the coming months. With the first proper update due to land in late October, it sounds like plans are already underway….

I originally found out about this on socials, but after reading this blogpost on Steam, I was also pleased to discover there is already a new update out today, starring The Gobbler, an alien that is out to chomp up your XP. There’s a new Evil Empire-themed legendary item (a hat, I think) to unlock, too.
