Dave the Diver is getting story DLC and its creators are looking to make more games in the same universe, according to Mintrocket director Jaeho Hwang (and he would know).
In an interview with the fine folks over at Video Games Chronicle, Hwang confirmed that he wants to expand the Dave the Diver IP. Here’s how he put it:
“We didn’t go really deep into the personal stories in Dave the Diver, because we wanted to keep the game very casual. So as a director, besides the story DLC that we’re working on right now, I also want to make separate games about each character to show how they met, what they did before coming to the Blue Hole,” he revealed.

According to Hwang, the plan is to explore different genres with any follow-up games, while also focusing on the various backstories of the characters who you meet during Dave’s dive-filled adventure.
“In that sense, the games’ genres can be different. Maybe one day, if we start to make a Dave’s backstory game, we could make Dave [another profession]. He’s always been a diver, so we really haven’t thought about how we should move with Dave.”
“I really want to show how he grew up, and how he became a diver, and how he ended up coming to the Blue Hole,” he added.

What I didn’t know before reading the interview is that Hwang has previous when it comes to connecting the projects he has worked on.
“I think it’s really fun,” the man from Mintrocket explained. “Cobra, one of our main characters, he’s from my previous project, Evil Factory. He was an arms dealer who had his license revoked, and after that, he retired and enjoyed his life, and something happened, and he decided to come into the Blue Hole. So I really want to tell this kind of story in other games.”
It sounds like Hwang and his team are having great fun building up an alternate universe for Dave the Diver to float around in. The promise of DLC and more games starring Dave and his buddies is certainly tantalising, and I very much look forward to hearing more about the story content that Hwang confirmed to VGC.
