Apparently, in the year since Glyphica: Typing Survival hit Early Access on Steam (Mac, Win), the game has shifted an impressive 800,000 copies. Not bad for a little game about typing.

More specifically, Glyphica: Typing Survival is a game about typing while words come at you from all angles. And these are angry words who just want to hit you with their horrible letters until you die of a word overdose. The bastards.

The game is all about speed and accuracy, and you’ve got to type those pesky letters out in the correct order and do so as quickly as possible if you’re going to avoid taking damage, while also unlocking new powers and abilities that help thin the word-herd.

I’m telling you all this because Glyphica: Typing Survival just got a new playable demo, but what makes this different from the existing Steam demo that’s been out for ages is that this one is playable in-browser.

If you’ve not played the game already, I recommend giving it a try. It’s certainly a novel experience and the pacing quickly ramps up into a frenzy of fingers dancing across the keyboard. I picked up the Steam version a few months ago, so I’ve not played the demo myself, but it’s available on PlayGlyphica.com if you’d like to take a look.

If you’re already a seasoned typing survivalist…

Alongside the new browser demo, there’s a big update for existing players to deal with. The paid version of the game comes rocking a new weapon called the Overlord, and it sounds like an ode to classic RTS gaming.

The Steam post explains how “the Overmind is the strategist’s favorite weapon, as it allows the survival typist to strategically target multiple enemies at the same time.

“High level players can use the Overmind to target problem areas strategically to pull them out of tight situations.”

The anniversary update also includes a new Super Relaxed Mode, for a more chill experience – to be fair, even the standard mode is INTENSE.

As well as that fun stuff, you can also expect the usual blend of tweaks and changes, and there’s a nice discount to tempt in a few newcomers.

Finally, when I was looking for additional details, I found the below Early Access roadmap, which I figured was worth including for you to have a quick look at.

As you can see, one of the two new weapons planned for the game has just been added, with the Wildcard still in the works over at aliasBLACK and Squeaky Wheel.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
