I’ve spent some quality time this morning diving back into the wonderful world of Gunfire Reborn. I’ve been revisiting this slick little first-person roguelite for the purposes of this news feature, but I also took the chance to go back and write a review, as the game actually launched before Rogueliker and I don’t have one on the site.

Anyway, we’re here to talk about the new DLC for Gunfire Reborn, and not the base game. The new content comes in two parts; paid-for guns and characters, and a patch for the base game that adds in fresh enemies and a sunny new location.

Echoes from Primal Grove DLC

The paid-for part of the expansion is called Echoes from Primal Grove and, as mentioned, it includes two new characters and four new weapons.

In fact, the name of the DLC somewhat reflects the nature of the two characters. One of them calls upon the support of mother nature, and the other turns primal for a bit of close-quarters damage dealing.

The two new characters are called Yoyo and Cang Jue respectively. Yoyo throws seedling-looking jade balls at her enemies, which drain them from behind while she attacks with her weapons from the front.

Cang Jue, on the other hand, transforms into a giant beast who waves his claws at enemies. The switch takes you from the game’s usual first-person perspective into the third-person, and you get a temporary health bonus that encourages melee combat. It didn’t take long for me to start enjoying Cang Jue’s violent dichotomy.

There are also four new weapons, and while I’ve tried them all I think my favourite is the new shotgun, Jackpot, which absolutely shreds anything foolish enough to get too close. The new Drift Shard was a lot of fun, too, but I’m always biased towards a good bow.

On top of those two there’s the Armillary Sash, which is a good option for crowd control as it binds enemies together, and the Viper Sight, a nifty little pistol that refracts damage between a group of enemies.

New content for everyone (on PC)

If you decide to pass on the paid-for stuff, PC players will still enjoy the benefit of a new season of content. The headline is a new stage and some crabby enemies, but there is also the new Fortune’s Roll feature, which is available in Nightmare and Reincarnation modes.

This new upgrade system randomly grants various effects, stuff like attack enhancements and skill cooldowns. In fact, we’re now able to reinforce certain builds with these dice rolls, however, the twist is that they boost your enemies, too.

The new stage in Act 3, Twilight Grove, comes with a bunch of new crab-themed enemy types, and there’s a chance that it can be accessed after beating Duo Fjord, “when entering Act 3 Stage 2 and Stage 3.”

If you want to read up on all the new free content landing as part of Season 6, including descriptions of the enemies and so on, there’s a blogpost over on Steam that explains everything.

Finally, let’s address the issue in parenthesis in the sub-heading, and that’s the availability of this new content. By the looks of it, this DLC is PC only, due to a contractual issue with 505 Games.

As such, and as far as I can tell, the console version of Gunfire Reborn doesn’t have any DLC nor is it getting updates. So, if you want to support the devs you should stick to the PC and mobile versions of the game.

Speaking of which, to mark the launch of Echoes from Primal Grove on Steam, the PC version and all of its DLC is currently heavily discounted!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
