I’m going to keep this introduction short and cough syrup-sweet because I’ve got a proper dose of the flu and it has wiped me out completely this week. If I’ve got any frivolous words left in me, I’m going to spend them on telling you about the best new roguelike and roguelite games coming in the month ahead.
As per, I’m skipping the AI slop, anything too basic or derivative, and I’m trying to keep the number of games down under 20 so we can stay focused. And so, without further achooo… here’s the monthly update for October, starting with…
Sous Raccoon | October 1 | PC (Win)

This culinary-themed roguelite is leaving Early Access this month, and while it looks like it’s going to bring family-friendly vibes to the party, don’t be fooled by the game’s cutesy style. I think Sous Raccoon is like the animal that has inspired it: feisty, quick, and a real handful if you’re not paying attention.
Moros Protocol | October 1 | PS5, Switch 2

After impressing on PC, Moros Protocol is coming to console, specifically the PS5 and Switch 2. This gritty first-person shooter is part immersive sim and part roguelite, but it’s all sci-fi action-horror. It’s got one or two quirks, but I think Moros Protocol is worth a look, especially if you love retro space shooters.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer | October 6 | PC (Win), PS5, Xbox Series

At first, when it was announced, I didn’t realise that Star Wars: Galactic Racer had a roguelite mode built into the single-player side of the game. I was delighted to discover more about the campaign structure last month, and I’ll be ready to share a deeper dive into my single-player experience with the combat racer in the near future.
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor | October 7 | PS5, Switch 1+2

I haven’t been paying too much attention to the news this last week or so, but one announcement that didn’t slip past me was that Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, one of my favourite bullet heavens, is finally completing the full set and launching on PS5 and the Switches.
Neon Abyss 2 | October 8 | PC (Win), PS5, Switch, Xbox

The co-op-infused action platformer hasn’t had the smoothest ride through Early Access, but that perception is slowly but surely being turned on its head. The combat is crisp, the controls are smooth, and the gameplay systems encourage plenty of diverse build crafting. Now it’s ready to leave Early Access, and I can’t wait to dive in and see how things stand in Neon Abyss 2.
Deck of Haunts | October 8 | Switch 1+2, PS5, Xbox

Another PC success story has made the jump to consoles this month, Deck of Haunts bringing its spooky take on deckbuilding to PS5, Xbox, and both Switches. This quirky little game is all about building the best haunted house possible, and using it to scare the crap out of any pesky ghost hunters who turn up at your door.
Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers | October 9 | PS5, Switch

Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is a really interesting spin on the concept of roguelike blackjack, but I fear that this one launched way too close to Balatro and got drowned out as a result. Here’s hoping the PS5 and Switch releases will give this chaotic deckbuilder a chance to make a splash.
Alpha Nomos | October 12 | PC (Win), PS5, Xbox

If you’re a big fan of the NecroDancer and games of that ilk, then put Alpha Nomos right at the top of your setlist. This musical roguelite is all about timing your attacks to perfection, and it looks cute as hell, too, thanks to the game’s distinctive puppet show aesthetic.
Burn With Me | October 12 | PC (Lin, Mac, Win)

Burn With Me self-identifies as a cosy occult deckbuilder, but I think it’s just an excuse to make us all unknowingly summon demons, and they’ve just made it look like a game when really it’s a crafty way of bringing on the end times. Having said that, much like the entire AI sector, don’t let the threat of your efforts bringing about an apocalypse deter you from checking out the game, which is out this month on all the PC platforms.
Hungry Horrors | October 13 | PC (Win)

After a journey through Early Access, this cook-off through British mythology is finally ready for tasting. In this story-focused roguelite, you’re sent into dungeon encounters with all manner of beasts, and if you don’t feed them some top nosh, it’s you on the menu instead!
Poly Fighter | October 13 | PC (Win)

Poly Fighter is one of the games that I discovered for the first time during my trawl for new releases. This retro-styled fighting game looks like a Virtua Fighter-era contender, and if they’ve got a convincing roguelike loop in there, too, this could be one to watch as it enters Early Access on PC.
CyberSushi | October 13 | PC (Win)

This slick-looking action-platformer is a bright and bold fusion of styles, and I’m interested to see if it plays as well as it looks. In fact, the whole presentation is really nice thanks to the neon-soaked aesthetic, and I’ll keep tabs on CyberSushi to see how it turns out.
Frosthaven | October 15 | PC (Win)

This adaptation of the Frosthaven board game (by Isaac Childres, and the sequel to Gloomhaven) is finally leaving Early Access, with Snapshot Games ready to deliver version 1.0 to players on PC. I’m eager to play this one, although I’ve not tried the board game that it’s based on, so I’ll be judging it purely on whether it stands up as a video game, and not whether or not it’s a good port.
Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction | October 15 | PC (Mac, Win)

There are usually one or two interesting genre-fusions in this article every month, and this time around it’s worth highlighting Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction. This unique-looking narrative roguelike is dripping with film noir style, and I’m hoping for something similarly compelling when I finally get around to knocking on this one’s door.
Ratatan | October 15 | PC (Win), PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series

A quick word for Ratatan, too, as it’s another game that is leaving Early Access this October. This rhythmic roguelite is the spiritual successor to Patapon, a cult classic series from yesteryear. Not only is the game finished on PC, but it’s also going to be dropping a beat on consoles this month, too.
Chained Beasts | October 15 | PC (Mac, Win), PS5, Switch, Xbox Series

This brutal little action roguelite is all about fighting for survival in the arena. As is made clear in the game’s title, you’ll be chained together with another gladiator and tasked with staying alive for as long as possible in Roman-era bloodsports. The art style looks interesting, and it’s another examination of a fascinating period of history that’ll take you from Carthage to Rome.
Curse of Resthaven | October 29 | PC (Mac, Win), PS5, Xbox

Curse of Resthaven is another super interesting game. I tried the extended demo, which you will be able to play as of October 8th (ahead of Steam Next Fest), and it revealed a game that blends roguelite repetition with point-and-click gameplay and brooding audio-visuals. If you’re a fan of classic adventure games, Curse of Resthaven is worth investigating. And just in time for Halloween, too!
Rogue Jungle | October 30 | PC (Win)

Finally, a quick word on Rogue Jungle, the new roguelite from Zoroarts, an upcoming dev who keeps crossing my radar with his thoughtful game design ideas. His viral hit came in the form of Paddle Paddle Paddle, which isn’t my cup of tea, but certainly points to a developer with big ideas.
Right, that’s your lot. I’ve got no words left, and I’m off to bed.
