The Birds of Play 2026 event, hosted on Steam and running through October 16th, is a dream for twitchers and twitterers – in both the traditional birdwatching and modern digital sense!

Developer Neon Aurelius has curated a flock of bird-themed games, demos and discounts for avian adventurers and those of us who never quite got over Flappy Bird. And among the feathered-friend themed fun, we noticed a cute little roguelite nestled among games like Sparrow Warfare and Deadliest Pigeon… Plume.

In Plume, you play a Roman-esque bird living in a cute, Pompeii-like village until, inevitably, it is destroyed by a nearby volcano (don’t you just hate it when that happens?).

As one of the few survivors, it is your mission to fight your way through procedurally-generated levels, gathering items to create better and better builds until you can restore your village to its former feathery fabulousness.

Along the way, via ice, fire and forest, you can collect power-ups to help you in your mission. But obviously, you don’t have a backpack. You’re a bird, and that would be silly. Your inventory is, in fact, your stomach.

Snacking your way past burning lava, deadly monsters and giant frogs, each item you eat shapes your fighting options, from increased fire rate to elemental damage. Eat smart and fight better. Find seeds and plant them, return to your decimated village and help them rebuild with powerful crops.

Plume will launch on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux in 2027. Playtest sign-ups are open now on the Steam page. The teams at Bird and Coreplix (of Virtual Perspective fame) would love to add you to the flock, so head on over to Steam to sign up.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
