Without wanting to sound dismissive of the game in front of me, it feels like every week we’re getting a new survivors-like / bullet-heaven / auto-shooter (pick your favourite genre title).

In fact, that may well be the case given the frequency of newly announced games, but let’s stay focused: Trinity Survivors is the latest genre entry and it just launched into Early Access on Steam.

What is Trinity Survivors (I hear you scream from deep within the abyss of your soul)? As the name implies, it’s a survivors-like in a similar vein to indie darling Vampire Survivors. Yet, this new entry in the genre has one or two interesting aspects that I’d like to mention.

First up, this particular survivors-like was made by Flyway Games. This is a new studio based in South Korea, and it’s a subsidiary of Krafton, the publisher behind the mighty PUBG.

As mentioned in the press release that put me on the case, Flyway has been established to “quickly [deliver] innovative gaming experiences”. With the burgeoning survivors-like genre pretty much everywhere, it sounds like this indie-sized company is the publisher’s effort to react to market trends with smaller sized games.

Trinity Survivors is the studio’s debut title and it offers two-player online co-op multiplayer. As you can see in the attached screenshot, it brings cartoon-style 3D graphics to a normally pixelated party. You control up to three characters at once; they move as one (similar to Yet Another Zombie Survivors, which also gives you three), with players able to pick leadership skills to benefit their team.

Over on the game’s Steam page, we’re told to expect an Early Access stay of at least 10 months. According to the notes shared there, the studio is “committed to continuously expanding the storyline and introducing additional content” during that time, although it sounds like the core of the game is already in place.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
