My sci-fi nerd dreams are all coming true this week, it would seem, after the announcement of Star Trek: Voyager – Into the Unknown landed alongside the reveal of a new game set in the Battlestar Galactica universe.

Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes is the name of the game, but I think just as exciting as the IP is the studio behind it – this really feels like a great marriage between license and developer.

The studio at the helm of this project is Alt Shift, the same team that is responsible for Crying Suns, one of the better FTL-likes out there. The key difference between CS and Faster Than Light, in my opinion, is Alt Shift’s emphasis on storytelling, and this is why I think Scattered Hopes could be a great mix of emergent narrative and proc-gen.

Much like Into the Unknown casts you as the captain of Voyager, Scattered Hopes puts you in the shoes of a Gunstar Captain who reports to Admiral Adama from the show. Together you will lead humanity’s charge away from the Cyclons, the ruthless machine race that is out to eleminate their creators.

Much like the Rebels in FTL, the Cylon will always be one step behind you. In order to get away, players will have to make sacrifices, manage their resources, deliberate over faction politics, and preside over tactical space battles. There’s also mention of meta upgrades, putting this firmly in roguelite territory.

The Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes Steam page doesn’t contain a huge amount of additional detail, but you can at least wishlist the game there ahead of its planned take-off in Q1, 2026.

Now, call me greedy, but if the universe is granting video game-based wishes, I’d also appreciate an FTL-like about keeping the Rebel Alliance out of the clutches of the Death Star, you know, just to complete the set… So say we all!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
