If you’re a big fan of survivors-likes and/or Deep Rock Galactic, then there’s a really good chance that you’re already up-to-date when it comes to DRG: Survivor.

For the uninitiated: this sci-fi auto-shooter by Funday Games is set in the Deep Rock Galactic universe. However, while this spin-off is full of dwarves, rock, and stone, it also borrows a lot of ideas from the survivors-like genre, including its isometric camera.

While the game borrows, it also burrows; mining your way through dense walls of rock and grabbing resources is a big part of the loop. In that sense, while it is an ode to Vampire Survivors, it also feels very much like its own thing. Anyway, let’s get to the point…

Gear is coming to DRG: Survivor in 1.0

When the 1.0 version of the makes an appearance in September, it’ll do so with a new gear system, with new items dropping at various times during regular play and also after defeating bosses. There are six different types:

  • Armor – buff defensive stats, such as regen and max HP.
  • Weapon Mods – boost your crit chance and rate of fire.
  • Canisters  Area of effect damage boosts.
  • Gadgets – chomp through rock faster and pick-up from further.
  • Tools – nothing fancy, just range and reload speed.
  • Chips – treats for Bosco!

There will be different rarities, items will borrow stats from different category types, and new gear will drop when you hit certain level-linked milestones. The full post over on Steam details the whole system and how it works, so hit the link if you’d like to find out more.

Still with me? Well in that case, as you’re a fan of Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, there’s a reasonable chance you might find something of interest in my guide to bullet heavens, auto-shooters, and games like Vampire Survivors.

Still with me? Oh gosh, I’m running out of things to say. Erm… you could read my earliest impressions of DRG: Survivor, if you like, but they’re probably a bit out of date by now.

Actually, wait a sec, there are the new expansions for Deep Rock Galactic: The Board Game – Rival Incursion and Horrors of Hoxxes – which we’re insta-funded over on Kickstarter. That’s probably worth mentioning here, right?

Ok, let’s wrap it up, this was supposed to be a quick news… Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is currently in Early Access (and has been since last February) and will get its full release on PC (Win) on September 17.

Just to let you know, this article has been updated with a little extra detail, particularly about the Kickstarter campaign.

Still with us? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked rogues, the following articles represent a huge collection of the best roguelike games ever made.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
