Regardless of what you might think about this list, and more importantly, the games that haven’t amassed enough reviews to get a score here, there are some seriously excellent games below.

I’ve made my own list of the best roguelike games, as broad as that might be, and a lot of the games below are detailed on that page; however, my toplist is based on my own personal experiences, none of the games are scored, and I’m not bold enough to even think about putting them in order.

In terms of inclusion, the list below includes games that are primarily considered roguelikes and roguelites. Furthermore, they all have enough scored reviews to have a meta-score, but it’s this caveat that rules out so many great roguelike games that haven’t attracted enough interest from the wider gaming press. That is ultimately the flaw that renders this list unreliable and a bit of a curiosity. There are too many great roguelikes missing for it to feel conclusive.

Finally, there are so many great games out there that I’m sure I have missed something. Apologies in advance for that. This article started when I was messing around with the collection functionality in my Steam account. Following that, I spent time sifting through tons of pages on Metacritic, but after a while, my eyes started getting tired. That’s why I decided to stop at 85.

Overall, it’s an interesting list full of great games. I still prefer mine, but I’m biased. The Meta-list does kick up some interesting results, though. Hades and Hades II are the best-ranked action-roguelites; Dwarf Fortress is the best-rated turn-based roguelike I could find; and the lovely Cobalt Core is not only joint top with 94, but it’s also the best-performing deckbuilder, ahead of Slay the Spire and Balatro!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
