The road to 1.0 is coming to an end for Caves of Qud, with the game finally set to shake off the shackles of Early Access before the end of the year.
While there’s still no firm release date to report just yet, we did get a big progress update from developer Freehold Games and publisher Kitfox Games. The key points, as shared over on Steam, are as follows:
Feature Fridays are ending this week (September 20) so the team can focus on the final stretch.
A beta for the new tutorial will be available in early October.
The price is rising. After October 29 the base game will go up to $29.99 USD (and the OST will be $9.99) – not sure re UK prices yet.
Beyond those three talking points, the update details the fine tuning that is going on behind the scenes, and promises that the ending is coming along nicely. Or as they put it: “we are absolutely cooking!”
I for one can’t wait to see what they serve up in version 1.0 of Caves of Qud, a game that already stars in my article about the best roguelikes.

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.
Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!
Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.
Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.
Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2 | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
