Once again two of the world’s finest entertainment niches – roguelikes and tabletop games – are coming together, this time in the form a board game version of Children of Morta.
Children of Morta is a stunning pixel-art action-RPG with a roguelite twist and an endearing emphasis on family. The game, which was developed by Dead Mage and published by 11 bit Studios, puts you in control of The Bergsons, and together this family of heroes must work to push back the upcoming Corruption that’s taking over their home.
This charming pixel-art video game has clearly developed a large enough community to warrant further expansion, and that growth has manifested itself in the form of a board game.
Before you start reaching for your wallet/purse, this particular board game isn’t out yet. However, you will be able to support the game when the upcoming Kickstarter campaign gets going, and if you follow the link you can register on the platform and get a reminder when it’s live.
Kickstarter launch date and game details
Roomiz Games is handling the design of Children of Morta: The Board Game, and I’m genuinely interested in seeing how they adapt the action-roguelite gameplay into a tabletop setting. There isn’t much in the way of detail, but they did confirm that the Kickstarter campaign is due to take place in Spring 2024.
According to an announcement post by Dead Mage: “Children of Morta: The Board Game can be played solo or with up to four players aged 12 years and up, and has a gameplay length of around 45 minutes per game.”
Meanwhile, the developer of the board game, Roomiz Games, confirmed a few additional details over on their website.
The board game dev confirmed that it’s a “cooperative adventure game with a unique shared bag-building mechanism, permanent character development, an emphasis on family growth, simultaneous turns, and interconnected cooperation.”
