Buckshot Roulette is a very strange game indeed, but it resonated with a large number of people when it hit PC back in April 2024. Despite looking very low-fi, the interesting offer and grimy theme made it a cult classic, one that many developers have tried to imitate one way or another ever since.

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of imitation, and the games industry in particular is powered by developers who stand on the shoulders of giants, as the saying goes. And so, with that in mind, I’ve today caught wind of a release date for CloverPit, an interesting little game that borrows ideas of Buckshot Roulette and more.

What is CloverPit, then?

Described as a roguelite “slot machine nightmare” and “the demonic lovechild of Balatro and Buckshot Roulette”, CloverPit wants you to gamble your life away in a morbid slot machine debt simulator.

This isn’t a huge distance from the theme of Luck be a Landlord, although it’s only the roof over your head that’s at risk in that one. In CloverPit, things can go quite a bit worse if you’re not lucky. And let’s be honest, you’re not always going to be that lucky, are you, punk?

The game will have players manipulating the slot machine and trying to find huge combos that are built around synergised build tweaking.

On top of that, we’ll also have to endure a sinister escape room atmosphere, which reminds me of Buckshot Roulette sure, but I’m also getting Inscryption vibes too.

As for the when and where… developer Panik Arcade is pulling the lever and launching CloverPit on Steam PC on September 3rd. Don’t believe me? Watch the release date trailer below and see for yourself, and if you’re intrigued, there’s a demo available to try before you die.

The real CloverPit launch date

In order to dodge the monster that is Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is dropping on September 4th on PC and console, CloverPit is now set to land on September 26th. Given the hype around Silksong, I can’t say I blame them!

Now, if you want to see some moving pictures, check out the entirely incorrect release date announcement trailer for CloverPit below!

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
