Update: A new release date for Ratatan has just been confirmed, with the delayed game now having a very specific launch time. The game will be arriving on Friday, 19th September, 2025, and we even know the times (12:00 a.m. JST / 3:00 p.m. UTC / 8:00 a.m. PDT).

We also got some new details, as shared during an event on August 7. World 3 (Jam Jammer Jungle Journey) and World 4 (Frozen Flower Fantasia) have been confirmed, as have new Ratatans, with “new weapon types — including staves, bombs, scythes, and hammers” set to “add greater variety to the battlefield.”

Original: July’s roguelike line-up just got a little less stacked as Ratatan, the spiritual successor to Patapon, has been delayed.

In a blog post on Steam, the game’s developers explained that its original 25th July release date has been postponed, as they don’t have enough time to address feedback from the demo.

Some of the main criticisms raised include:

• The roguelike structure and reward pacing feeling unsatisfying
• Frustration over some Ratatans being unable to use skills
• Lack of impact in visuals and presentation
• Requests for improvements to content structure, pacing, and mid-term gameplay flow

The devs have reassured players, though, that a release date is in the process of being finalised and will be announced soon. They also stated that they will continue to update and improve the game post-launch based on player feedback.

Ratatan’s release date?

Developed by TVT and Ratata Arts, Ratatan is a rhythmic side-scrolling action game with roguelite aspects for up to four players. As already mentioned, it’s the spiritual successor to an old fave, Patapon.

I was able to play the demo myself during Steam Next Fest, and whilst I thought its visuals and unmistakable Japanese-style were incredibly charming, it did take me a bit of time getting in sync with its rhythm-based action. You can read my early thoughts here.

Finally, fans will now be asking: when will we get our hands on Ratatan? Obviously the July release date has slipped, but it hopefully won’t be too far off.

We don’t know anything firm at the moment, although the developers are looking into ways to get the Early Access build into the hands of Kickstarter backers as soon as possible. As for everyone else; as soon as we hear something different, we’ll let you know here.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
