Christmas has come early for Brotato fans as developer Blobfish just dropped a big content update and a paid-for DLC expansion on the same day (that day being Friday, October 25th).

The headline is Abyssal Terrors, the new expansion for the game that introduces a bunch of new enemies, plus new characters and more.

I’ve spent a couple of hours playing the new content today (when I should have been doing housework), and although my little potato friend got mashed pretty quickly, it’s nice to have some new content.

There are a load of new items in the expansion, and variety is the spice of life, as they say. However, it now feels like all the new stuff is making it harder to assemble a higher level build as there’s simply so much more in the pool.

How much stuff? Well, there are 14 new characters in the paid-for update, 16 weapons, and more than new 30 items. There are also new curse and charm mechanics to balance as you rank up your Brotato. Plenty to be getting on with, then.

Brotato’s Free Local Co-Op Update Content

And that’s not all, folks! Today was also the day that Blobfish unleashed the game’s new four player co-op mode. I’ve not tried it yet, but I will as soon as I can and if it’s great I’ll make sure to add it to my list of the best co-op roguelikes.

The free content update also includes a few treats for existing playeres, with four fresh-faced characters, five weapons, and 15 new items included. There’s also a new accessibility option that allows you to retry a busted run.

Given the huge slice of content that has just been added to the game, there are lengthy patch notes to read if you want to get into the nitty gritty of it. Head over to Steam for all the details.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
