After giving away their game Guntouchables during the day of its release, developer Game Swing has confirmed an impressive number of post-apocalyptic survivors took up arms and joined the fight.

In fac, two million people grabbed the game on Steam in the previous 24 hours. That’s not too shabby for an unheralded indie! Here’s what the head Guntouchable at Game Swing, Martin Kai Sommer, had to say on the matter:

“Giving the game away for free was a huge gamble for us. As an indie studio, it is incredibly difficult to capture people’s attention, and we really believed in Guntouchables’ quality.

“We have been blown away by the positive response from players, and we have worked hard to deliver a game that both loyalists and new players can enjoy for years to come. This is the perfect game to bring a friend to, so we hope to see more people join the apocalypse from here on out!”

If you missed out on the co-op shooter while it was gratis, then fret not as the game can still be purchased for the price of a couple of beers over on Steam.

Original: I’m going to keep this briefer than I would normally, because although I’m currently working on some launch day impressions of Guntouchables, the new post-apocalyptic co-op shooter from Game Swing, there’s some breaking news that you should probably know!

The reason for my brevity is the time-limited nature of the news that Guntouchables is currently free-to-keep for anyone who grabs the game within the first 24 hours. Starting any minute now through until this time tomorrow (August 8, 10am CEST), you can grab it gratis over on the Steam (Windows).

Guntouchables is an isometric co-op shooter with plenty of Saturday night cartoon swagger, about a gang of unlikely survivors who are on the hunt for gear and beer in the post apocalypse.

Together or with up to three of your favourite most readily available friends, you can take on short extraction based missions and other co-op challenges, with plenty of build tweaking and levelling to do between levels.

I’ll be back later tomorrow with my impressions, but you don’t really have to wait for my thoughts on this one given the gracious nature of the launch day giveaway of Guntouchables over on Steam.

If you would like to read something while it downloads, however, I played Guntouchables earlier this year, and you can read my demo impressions right here.

Still with us? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked rogues, the following articles represent a huge collection of the best roguelike games ever made.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
