Roguelike gameplay loops are getting a bit left-field, I think it’s fair to say, and the latest horror roguelite to put a fresh spin on the Buckshot Roulette formula is 500 Finger Fillet, a game that genuinely wants you to stab yourself to survive.

Yes, you read that correctly, Dear Reader: 500 Finger Fillet is a new game about stabbing yourself in the hand so that you can stay alive a bit longer. It’s by the creator of Unfair Flips (which you may have heard of, but I hadn’t) and their new studio, Deadbody Games.

Now, I’m always up for a bit of clever immersive roguelite horror, and 500 Finger Fillet has a really interesting premise, with gameplay based on the age-old dumb-ass game where men – it’s always men (and androids, I guess) – try to stab the gap between their fingers down the pub.

Except here, you’re not down the pub laughing with your friends or fellow marines. This twisted escape room-inspired horror roguelite instead straps you into a hand-stabbing machine. Not only that, but it wants you to then stab yourself for freedom, but naturally there’s a decent chance you’re going to chop your fingers off and even bleed to death. Nice, right?!

You’ve got to survive for twenty minutes, and to do so you’ll be given a range of different implements to work with, including rusty forks and ritual blades. Naturally, you can earn points by STABBING YOURSELF IN THE FRICKIN HAND and then spend them to boost your chances and buy new game-changing items, hopefully pushing you closer to escaping.

If this sounds like your idea of a good time, then you can play the new demo for 500 Finger Fillet right now, over on Steam PC (Win). Just don’t try the whole stabby stabby thing for real down the pub after, k?!!

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
