Odd Dreams Digital got in touch this week to tell me all about today’s update for Everything is Crab, and the newest injection of content to The Animal Evolution Roguelite comes in the form of some interesting community creations.

There is a lot of stuff to tell you about in the so-called Evolution 1.2 update, as it introduces new community-designed Evolutions, as well as a number of player-requested features.

The bit about the community-created stuff is quite specific, so I’m going to let the devs do the heavy lifting for me, with Specialisation-related stuff in parentheses:

  • Spinnerets drop a huge spiderweb behind Darwin with even more slowing power. (The Spinnerets’ Egg Sac Specialisation spawns a baby Darwee that’s a half Darwin, half Crawlee hybrid.)
  • Pedal Glands generate a slime trail that slows enemies and speeds Darwin up when travelling across it. (Jet deploys secretions like the Pedal Glands slime trail and Spinnerets Spiderweb.)
  • Projectile Tongue shoots Darwin’s tongue out, piercing all enemies in its path and stunning the first creature it hits. (Sticky lets you pull yourself towards smaller enemies and items or drag bosses closer.)

You got all that? Good.

The new stuff doesn’t stop there, although it starts getting a bit more functional from here on in. For starters, there are now mid-run saves, which I’m rather pleased about. There are also new starting options for players to consider.

The quality-of-life improvements even extend to better controller support, another thing I’m personally pleased about, as well as the usual tweaks and bug fixes you’d expect in any update such as this.

If reading in-depth patch notes is your idea of a good time, I’m not here to yuck your yum. Head this way to Steam for all the deets.

Finally, the last time I talked to Odd Dreams Digital, the studio was celebrating 250k copies of the game sold (hit the link for the full Everything is Crab interview). The presser sitting in my inbox confirms that the game has now shifted an impressive 600k copies. Well done to everyone at Odd Dreams Digital and Secret Mode!

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
