If you’re already familiar with Katanaut, the sci-fi horror that launched last year on PC, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Voidmaw’s roguelike platformer has just received a chunky content update called Into the Void, and best of all, it’s free.
If you’re not already in the loop on this one, Katanaut is a roguelite platformer drenched in cosmic horror and even more mutant blood.
In my Katanaut review, I wrote that “combat requires constant quick thinking”, adding that it’s “the kind of game that wants you to commit to action instinctively; otherwise, enemies get increasingly dangerous, and more monsters spawn in.”
This is a punishing game that rewards skill, and it’s perfect for Dead Cells fans looking for something more visceral and violent.
There’s also a strong Dead Space vibe, as you must explore a space station that has fallen victim to an otherworldly mutant plague, delving deeper into its mysteries as you grow stronger and more proficient in the way of the sword.
Katanaut: Into the Void
The headline addition is probably the new difficulty setting: Warp 4. This makes you run the entire station backwards, with elites “hunting you the whole way down.” I’m guessing this is for advanced players because this sounds like nightmare fuel to me…
Developer Voidmaw also described new level The Warp as “soon-to-be-dreaded”, which bodes ill for all of us! There’s also a new final boss and ending to go with, as well as new enemy variants and, excitingly, new katana upgrades!
The post also mentioned the addition of some new music, added lore notes, and the usual offering of quality-of-life improvements and balance tweaks. Head to Steam for all of the patch notes.
If you’re a newcomer, on the other hand, given that there’s currently a 69% discount on Katanaut, there has never been a better time to dig into this disgustingly good action-roguelite.
Want even more incredible roguelike platformers? Katanaut is just one of several great roguelites and roguevanias to feature in my round-up!
