Worms and I go way back, before Team17 was a major indie publisher, when they focused more on making games. The studio’s breakout hit was the original Worms, and these pink squishy creatures have kept the company nourished ever since.

Now Team17 has announced that two new Worms games are in the works. The first is simply called Worms and is a call-back to the games of old, which take place on a 2D battlefield. You know exactly what I’m talking about.

Much more interesting, however, is the announcement of Worms Galactic Tactics, a new 3D tactics game with a roguelike twist. That’s right, my fellow Roguelikers, Worms is going rogue!

According to the announcement, we’ll be honing a three-worm hit squad, each with its own loadout of classic Worms-style weaponry, including the “exploding sheep, Cosmic Donkeys, and holy hand grenades.”

This new Worms game will have metaprogression between battles, where players will be able to use new offensive and defensive mods to upgrade their weapons and utilities. We’ll need these skills if we’re going to take on Emperor Flugg, who’s the big bad in Galactic Tactics.

There’s an announcement trailer below, which shows some of the new gameplay in action, and therein you’ll see how you’ll be moving your worms around in their new 3D space. Don’t worry, it’s still destructible!

Finally, the official info bit: Worms Galactic Tactics is being developed by Absolutely games, and it is heading to PC (Win), PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series in 2027.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
