Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons was released last November, and after playing it for a couple of hours and realising that I couldn’t really recommend it, I moved on to something else. C’est la vie, as they say.
Fast forward to today, when I learned about a major overhaul coming to the game in August, and I was reminded that a Bubble Bobble roguelite has the potential to be really good, actually.
Now, after reading about the plans to revitalise the game around the 40th anniversary of the franchise, I’m once again hoping that Taito can realise the potential in this cute and cuddly puzzle roguelite.
First up, there’ll be a new maze-like castle stage to explore. Further mixing up the game, three new challenge stages are being thrown into the mix in the guise of Bob’s Bonus Gates. Now you’ll be able to skip a few levels or grab extra treasure, shaping your run a bit.
It was also revealed that item drops are being turned up to 11 and that powerful new items are coming. The only downside of all this new stuff, however, is that you’ll need to delete your old save. That said, if the new content can inject a bit more energy and dynamism into the experience, losing an old save file will be well worth it.
As for the “where and when” of it, the Boost Update is coming to PC (Win), PS5 and Switch on August 20, 2026. If you’d like to know more, I discovered the new update via this Steam post.
