Board game fans will be aware of Gloomhaven and Frosthaven, two big-box tabletop games designed by Isaac Childres that have become very popular over the last few years. Gloomhaven came first, was then converted into a video game, and now we have Frosthaven, which first hit tabletops back in 2022.

The video game adaptation of Frosthaven has been in Early Access since last summer, but with the release of the 1.0 build, we’re getting the complete game, and that includes the final hero and the last chapter of the campaign.

Of course, Frosthaven isn’t a roguelike, but it does utilise some proc-gen elements when constructing its various challenges. It is a lovingly realised adaptation of the tabletop game, and the visuals are complex and interesting. In fact, nothing expresses the level of technical polish in the game better than the new cinematic trailer, embedded below.

Frosthaven is also a rules-dense game, just like the board game it’s based on. As such, there’s a learning curve, and that’s worth bearing in mind if you plan on diving into the co-op (it supports up to four players) and getting a friend or three up to speed.

Other interesting things about the game include the character classes, which are much more interesting than you’ll find in a bog-standard fantasy RPG. There is a big focus on party balance and build experimentation, and the turn-based combat has tremendous depth and nuance for those who get lost in the stats.

If you’d like to see more of the game, the new gameplay overview trailer below gives you a two-minute overview of what you can expect to find in the newly released adaptation by Snapshot Games. After that, head to Steam if you’d like to take a closer look at Frosthaven.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
