Kingfall isn’t the first father-son development story I’ve covered in my time, nor will it be the last. However, it might be the one that has captured my interest most intently, thanks to the influences that have informed its design. And because I’m a soppy old git, but I digress…
As a lapsed chess player and an enthusiastic fan of deckbuilders, Kingfall hits all the right notes as far as I’m concerned. The game includes a 300-strong collection of cards, and they represent your units, which are grounded in the rules of classic chess.

Developed by DryGin Studios dev J-F Mitchell (Bio Inc, Extinction Day) under the multi-generational banner of Legendary Pixels, it’s the work of a full-time game dev and his 10-year-old chess-loving son.
As you can see in the attached screenshot, the game was developed by the pair on paper, but Mitchell the Elder went away and turned the prototype into a working video game!

If your interest is piqued too, there’s a demo for Kingfall set to drop during the upcoming Steam Next Fest. After that, the game is expected to launch on PC (Win) at some point in early 2027.
Finally, you can watch the announcement trailer for Kingfall below, and if you head over to Steam, you can put the game on your wishlist and track its progress ahead of next year’s launch.
