There is a growing number of really entertaining physics-based roguelikes out there. Part-deckbuilders or engine-builders, part-physics games, these games are all chaos, planning, and luck.

These exciting games are all about making the numbers go up via extravagant engine building, hitting targets, and causing chain reactions. If you hadn’t guessed: I’m a fan of this burgeoning niche.

Many of the games in this sub-genre, including the one I’m writing about today, also lean into the wonderful world of pachinko. My whole family loves Peggle, and I’m a big fan of both Peglin and Ballionaire, too. That means I’m primed to have fun with Ballisticards, a new game by SuperYellows, that was recently announced and shared on Steam.

What I like about Ballisticards is the fact that deckbuilding element seems to be a much more prominent part of the experience. I’m also into the idea of building strange contraptions to chase high scores. Finally, I really like how creative the item placement looks. The fact that these systems all feed into each other is what gives me hope.

There’s no demo at the time of writing, but one is definitely in the works. You can wishlist the game over on Steam, and there’s an announcement trailer below, showing the game in action, should you wish to see it with thine own eyes.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
