One of my favourite developers is Paradox Interactive. Why do I like them so much? They make one of my very favourite games: Crusader Kings III. I love it so much I’m considering folding it into my coverage here on Rogueliker – it’s not a roguelike, I confess as much, but I do play Ironman Mode, so there’s no taking backsies.

Anyway, I’m way off topic. I’m actually here to talk about Escape the Mad Empire, a recently signed roguelike role-playing game that has just been unveiled by its new publisher: Paradox Arc (a publishing brand within the wider Paradox Interactive empire).

What is Escape the Mad Empire and when can I play it?

This roguelike dungeon crawler features “intense tactical pause combat” with a base management twist, and there’s already a demo available for you try. Simply head on over to Steam and get downloading, which I’m sure a few of you will because this one looks lovely thanks to its gorgeous pixart.

The Steam listing includes a few interesting details, which I’ll do my best to condense for you here real quick. The key takeaway is that the game is expected to wear its Early Access tags for roughly one year, and it’ll get more expensive as more content is added. They also reckon that there’s roughly 40 hours of content already in the demo.

During its time in EA, developer XperimentalZ Games has promised to work with their burgeoning community to enhance the game’s various mechanics. That includes party-based tactical combat and management, real-time pausable battles (a Paradox favourite), and what sounds like an interesting corruption mechanic that’ll test the mettle of your party members. Consider my interest piqued!

Now, check out the trailer below to see more of the game, and hit the link access the demo on Steam and do the whole wishlisting thing, if you feel so inclined.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
