If you’re a fan of the burgeoning extraction shooter genre, and you’re not already in the loop on Sulfur, please allow me to get you up to speed.

Developed by Perfect Random, this gritty, hard-nosed first-person shooter is a dungeon crawler turned roguelite with an extraction hook. It’s a potent medley of mechanics, and I think it works really well, bringing real tension to each run.

I reviewed the Early Access version of Sulfur, and while I didn’t have a problem with the minimalistic visual style, it wasn’t the game’s selling point either. On that front, the devs at PR have been working hard to add a nice lick of paint to their challenging shooter.

It’s not just a visual upgrade; there are new side rooms and whatnot, intended to make things look better, feel more varied, “and hopefully slightly less comfortable.”

Er… I’m not sure I’ve ever found the game comfortable, per se.

Other major improvements are more systemic. The biggest one is the implementation of knockback, which makes this a bit more immersive if you ask me. Here’s how the devs explained the mechanic, with options during melee combat and, interestingly, from range, too!

“Melee weapons can now send enemies stumbling on both attacks and blocks, and we’ve added 16 new oils featuring Knockback for those who want to apply excessive force from a distance,” it says on Steam.

On top of that, we’re getting better inventory management tools and a couple of new weapons (the Ripox Mowlock and the Nightlily 318, respectively). We’re also getting 10 new combined enchantments!

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
