I love a good time-travel story, and the various theories of time travel have always interested me, too (read Time Travel: A History by James Gleick if you’d like to know more about this fascinating subject).
It’s a genre that works well with roguelite gameplay structures, because a roguelite run can easily be tied to a time loop that goes back on itself, giving you a legit reason to go back for another attempt. And another. And so on.
The latest game to have a go at looping time back on itself is Echo Sequence by Tamas Szabadi. It’s an isometric action-roguelite that has you going back and repeating your actions, except with the interesting twist that your past selves are still there as echoes.

It reminds me a little of a quirky old platform game called Super Time Force, which was a modest indie hit back in 2014 based on a similar idea. Of course, there are major differences, not least the camera angle and overall structure, but the idea of teaming up with your past selves is certainly a compelling concept that I’m eager to see in more detail.
The game’s eponymous echoes will be useful, too, as this futuristic isometric shooter has you working with your past selves to fight a horde of zombies, as well as complete interactions with yourself that can’t be done with just one person. Does that make it a single-player co-op game?
Echo Sequence is still some way off, with launch planned in 2027 on Windows PC, but the game just got a new Steam page, so you can hit the link and go wishlist it there. Alternatively, check out the new announcement trailer below.
