Roguecraft DX arrived on PC yesterday, and what on the face of it was the release of a fairly unassuming fantasy roguelite was in fact the completion of a fascinating journey for the team at Badger Punch Games.

The game started life at Amiga Assembly, where enthusiasts build new games for retro hardware. After that, the only way was up for Roguecraft, and it launched on the Commodore 64, the Amiga, and more recently, the Evercade.

Now it’s time for Roguecraft DX, which brings some old-school swagger, Lovecraftian terrors, and a storied background to the biggest audience possible, with the game finally getting a full release on PC (Win) over on Steam.

Over the years, Badger Punch has been adding new content and fresh modes, and the Steam version comes with an Endless Dungeon and a mode called Chicken Run.

Actually, let’s pause on Chicken Run for a moment. Apparently, this mode throws you into the dungeon as a chicken with 2HP, but if you can find a golden egg, you’ll turn into a “hulking hen” who can “unleash poultry powers” on their Lovecraftian enemies. Yikes.

This new mode sounds rather strange, sure, but I’m here for it. It also means that the PC version is the biggest one yet, and if you’re still unsure, there’s still a demo over on Steam.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
