There are a lot of grand strategy games about war out there, but when it comes to WW2, the list narrows down a bit, with Paradox’s Hearts of Iron IV being the one that really sticks in my mind the most.
However, a new strategy power is potentially rising, with developer Wilhelm Tranheden bringing Everfront to PC (Lin, Mac, Win) next month, at some still-to-be-determined point in November.
Furthermore, based on first impressions, the new strategy roguelike is definitely one to keep an eye on. Although you don’t need to take my word for it; there’s a new demo out now, ahead of Steam Next Fest.

Strategy titles like this one often boil down to painting the map your colour, but Everfront takes that premise and pushes it to the absolute limit. In fact, the key focus here is your country’s physical border, its defence and then eventual expansion.
This fight for territory continues throughout, and you’ll be using six different doctrines to wrestle power from your enemies (Focus, Blitz, Entrenchment, Avoidance, Terrain, and Naval).
Between victory and defeat, there’ll be some roguelike progression holding it all together, allowing you to unlock new upgrades for later use. Finally, the maps will have some procedural elements, too.
All told, Everfront sounds like my sort of game. I’ve not really dabbled in too much grand strategy in the last few years, as I’ve been laser-focused on roguelites, but a game that brings the best of both worlds into battle sounds like it could be very interesting indeed.
