There has been a spate of fun roguish game announcements lately, and among the silliest of them all is Earl vs. the Mutants by developer Falling State Games.
This top-down action roguelite puts you behind the wheel of a range of vehicles and casts you in the eponymous role of Earl. This post-apocalyptic actioner has you splatting an infestation of mutants, leaving a trail of cel-shaded blood and guts in your wake.
You’ll be upgrading your cars, battling bosses, and even utilising drones to help out. According to the presser we’ll be able to “create unique and powerful builds by using a combination of vehicle-mounted weapons, attack and support drones, upgrades, and game-changing temporary power-ups!”
The press release mentions both action-roguelites and so-called survivorlikes as key design influences. Studio chief Colter Haycock wrote: “With Earl vs. the Mutants, we wanted to shake things up by introducing high-speed player movement and encouraging the player to ram into enemies instead of constantly dodging.”
If you’d like to unleash your inner Mad Max, a demo will be dropping on Steam PC on January 18, ahead of Earl vs. the Mutants‘ full outing, which is due to arrive at some point in 2024.
