Another promising new indie roguelite has just been announced, and the more I have found out about it, the more interested I’ve become.

The newly announced game is called Rebels of the Solar Speedway, and it’s the work of Retro Reactor. It was announced this morning, and it has also just arrived on Steam, ready for wishlisting.

Now, if I were to tell you that Rebels of the Solar Speedway is a combat racer, you might imagine something like WipeOut, but with the Hot Wheels influence alluded to in the headline and a roguelite twist. That’s what I first thought, and I was dead wrong. The combat in this racing game is actually turn-based.

While it certainly is a turn-based tactics game like XCOM, Rebels of the Solar Speedway also sounds somewhat like a tabletop game, with an action phase and then a resolution phase. We’re also going to be encouraged to think two moves ahead, as you try to predict where your enemies might be moving to.

Underpinning the turn-based combat sequences is an interesting meta layer that’s driven (pun intended) around a galactic revolution against evil megacorps. Players will control a team of rebellious racers and use them in battle to take on the crews representing the evil corps, all the while serving the aims of the resistance.

In terms of gameplay variance, it sounds like there are going to be a lot of different cars and teams, as well as 30 weapons and many more weapon modules to tweak them. I also saw that there are 18 tracks, three cups to compete in, and random events to contend with.

The presentation looks rather good, the narrative is really interesting, and the overall concept feels like it could be a winner. There’s no word on when we’ll be able to get behind the wheel ourselves beyond 2027, but Rebels of the Solar Speedway is definitely one to watch.

Before you go, there’s a new teaser trailer below that shows the game in action, and let’s wrap up with a final word on how cool that title is!
