I know that a lot of us are finding it hard to justify budgeting for lots of new games these days, especially when so many of the roguelites we all play are absurdly good value for money.

That said, one game that has them all beat when it comes to value for money is Disfigure, which launched a couple of days ago and costs… absolutely nothing.

What is Disfigure?

Disfigure is a top-down horror shooter with a bullet heaven vibe and a striking art style. It’s the work of indie dev Cold Brew Entertainment, who has been working on the game for some time now, aided by community support.

Disfigure is a game where your field of view is very limited by an oppressive fog of war, with darkness surrounding your playable character. That pitch-black space is terrifying because it conceals a whole host of monsters that are out to kill you.

As you level up, you can start to control the space more confidently, light up the screen a bit, and you can actually start to see more glimpses of what you’re up against. I think it’s a really clever use of fog-of-war.

It’s a top-down shooter, so that means that you get to boost your character, equip new weapons, and then experiment with various build types. On that front, considering the pricing model, the amount of depth is rather impressive

Yes, it might look a little rustic, but it also takes a simple concept and executes it really well, and the low-fi Giger-Cthulu-inspired aesthetic works tremendously well with the fog-of-war gameplay hook, despite its limitations.

If you download this little indie gem and you like the cut of its atmospheric jib, then you can show your love by supporting the developer over on Steam, where there’s a donation tier for awesome people.

Still with me? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked roguelikes, this website is absolutely chock-full of them. Head over to the Guides Page for a concentrated hit of roguish games, organised via sub-genre and platform.

What’s more, there are always going to be new lists for emerging trends as well as fresh titles to highlight. This is because my backlog is embarrassingly long, and so I’m always trying to balance the new games that arrive in my inbox with playing the stuff I already have.
