Our best laid plans have gone completely wrong after the ongoing alpha was cancelled until further notice, possibly until it’s finished! Why? Because someone datamined the newest build of the game.

Original Article
Welcome to our year-long preview-in-progress of the recently launched alpha for online multiplayer in The Binding of Isaac. That’s right, Dear Reader, I’m in this for the long haul.
We’ve been waiting on the latest return of Isaac for some time now. The long-awaited rebirth of co-op gameplay in the elder roguelite, this time online, has come two years after the release of Repentance, the current iteration of the game.
I’ve played the game previously on console, so publisher Nicalis was kind enough to send over PC access so that I could capture my progress. Unfortunately, the warnings from the publisher that this was a proper beta (they later started calling it an alpha) and not a marketing stunt, were accurate in this particular instance.
We’ll go over the contents of the video shortly, but before that, let’s cover the basics.
The Binding of Isaac: Online Multiplayer
In this ongoing alpha, which started on November 30, we have been invited to play the entirety of the game in co-op with up to three friends online. The caveat is that the only version of the game compatible with multiplayer is Repentance, so old builds (Rebirth and Afterbirth) won’t work. Ever.
As mentioned, we knew that the test phase was going to be riddled with bugs as the developers told us as much, however, everyone jumped in hopeful that they would have a good experience.
In our case, we encountered full client crashes, and then once we got into a stable game, the performance was still very slow. At times we couldn’t even see things that were happening on the other’s screen, which prompted some interesting moments as we tried to avoid the various dangers in Isaac’s basement.

It’s clear that there is a lot of work to be done to improve things, and we’re not the only ones that seem to be experiencing difficult times. Indeed, a quick scan of social media reveals that many people are finding unexpected technical hiccups all over the place.
What is interesting is that I think a good majority of people that I’ve seen raising issues are taking their respective problems in their stride, and responses seem measured and civil. After having spent my whole career watching people lose their shit over very minor mistakes, I’d like to say a little “well done” to the game’s community!
Gameplay impressions
I’ve put the footage online as we’ll be going back to capture more as the game is updated over the course of the alpha, which is expected to run for most of 2024. That way, you’ll be able to see how the game’s performance improves over time.
As for the footage below, my partner in crime, the ever dependable TrogDorDor, kept going for as long as he could in the face of technical adversity. His noble pursuit of progress has been captured for posterity and can be watched below.
I did my best to keep up, but I kept finding myself taking damage due to a combination of terrible lag and my own personal crapness. At times, you’ll see my avatar make strange movements, or even do nothing at all; that’s because things were so slow on my side that the game was basically unplayable.
I’ll be back in a month or so with an update, because this particular online alpha has a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off policy. That should mean we see rapid progress and quick fixes, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that our ongoing account of the game’s progress will stand as a definitive guide throughout the process. See you next month!
The Binding of Isaac online beta key password
Getting into the demo is fairly straight forward. You’ll need to follow the steps below, and then apply the password.
It’s worth noting that this password will change over the course of the tests, so I’ll do my best to ensure that the Isaac online beta key is always kept up to date.
The current online beta key for The Binding of Isaac is: combthedesert
Step 1: Have The Binding of Isaac: Repentance installed in your Steam Library
Step 2: right-click on the title in your library and select Properties
Step 3: go to the Betas tab and type the beta key into the Private Betas box and click Check Code.
Step 4: Click the button that will appear that says “Opt in to [beta branch name]. You should then also see [beta branch name] in the Betas Participation box in that same tab.
Following this, your game should update, and the next time you launch it you should see a prompt that you will have to read and accept, then you’ll see “Online Beta” at the title screen, and the “Online” option at the main menu.
To return to the standard release version of Repentance, simply open the Betas tab again and set the Betas Participation tab to “None”.
That’s it! I think? Oh yes, you need the password don’t you?
