As you might have noticed from our recent output, I’ve been sucked back into Brotato following the announcement that new content is on the way at the upcoming Triple-i Initiative showcase next month.

Yesterday, I published a Brotato beginner’s guide packed with handy tips for those just starting out in this spud-powered roguelite, and now I’m back with my recommendations for three character classes that are perfect for newcomers. Study both of these texts wisely, and you’ll be an unstoppable killing machine on the way to Wave 20 in no time.

Before I start, it’s worth mentioning that I have excluded the Well-Rounded character. Not only would this have been an extremely obvious pick, but I think there are even better options for you to choose.

Anyway, enough rambling, and onto my very first suggestion…

Ranger – +50 range and available from the start

I might be slightly biased with this one, as I’m a big fan of ranged weapons, and Ranger was the first character that led me to victory in Brotato.

The Ranger is available from the very start, and with its generous +50 boost to ranged damage, it’s an excellent option for beginners who prefer to keep their distance from enemies while wielding an arsenal of guns.

To create an unstoppable build, invest your points as you level up in attack speed, range, critical chance, and ranged damage. The one limitation for this class to be wary of is that max HP modification are limited by 25%. You can combat this, though, by also investing in upgrades such as armour, life steal, and dodge.

Doctor – HP Regeneration modifications are increased by 100%

For a safer and more forgiving playstyle, the Doctor is absolutely your man and can be unlocked after you heal 200 HP in a single wave.

The Doctor’s biggest strength is that HP regeneration modifications are increased by 100%, making the character far more forgiving when mistakes happen and allowing you to recover health much more efficiently during longer waves.

The Doctor also gains a massive +200% attack speed bonus when using medical weapons such as Scissors or the Medical Gun. I’d recommend sticking with these weapons exclusively and investing your level-up points into damage and melee or ranged damage to help offset their lower base damage.

Multi-tasker – you can equip up to 12 weapons at a time

Last but not least we have the Multi-tasker. This is one of my favourite classes to play around with as you can wield up to 12 weapons at the same time giving you the ultimate taste of power.

The drawback is that each weapon reduces your damage stat by 5%, but it’s a small trade-off considering you’re getting much more firepower. If you plan to go all-in, you can offset this by investing in skills or upgrades that boost your damage.

To unlock the Multi-tasker you’ll need to collect 5,000 materials. This is something you’ll accomplish naturally by just playing the game, and in my own experience I was able to unlock it within my first hour or so.

Still with us? Of course you are! If you want to keep reading about great hand-picked rogues, the following articles represent a huge collection of the best roguelike games ever made.

The Best Roguelike Games: great roguelites, deckbuilders, RPGs, bullet heavens, and more

Next, there are genre-specific lists that delve into the best roguelike games of all types. I’ve pulled out the best examples from each category, alongside the links to more in-depth articles!

The best turn-based roguelikes: Caves of Qud | There are some seriously incredible turn-based roguelikes out there. Of all the modern games, these are the closest to the original Rogue.

Great bullet heavens and auto-shooters: Vampire Survivors | There could be only one choice for this category, given how all other games are called survivors-likes for a reason!

Awesome first-person rogues: Gunfire Reborn | We almost went with Blue Prince for this spot, but most people checking out first-person rogues probably want to wield a gun, you know?!

Cool roguelike deckbuilders: Balatro | Sorry, Slay the Spire fans, but this poker-solitaire deckbuilder has stolen Mike’s heart and won’t give it back.

Brilliant roguelite top-down and third-person shooters: Returnal | Bit of a broad one, but with our other favourite action-roguelites featured elsewhere, we were obliged to mention Returnal here.

Exciting roguelike platformers: Spelunky | Now, don’t get us wrong, Dead Cells is an incredible game, especially with all the DLC switched on. But when it comes to impact, you just can’t beat Spelunky.

Strategy Roguelikes: FTL Faster Than Light | Another classic roguelike that we’re still playing years after launch.

Amazing action-roguelites: Hades 2  | And finally, let’s wrap things up with our favourite of them all. There’s no beating the original Hades, although Hades 2 comes pretty close!
